How to Safely Hammer a Nail

Posted by RG Sayson on 19 May 2020

There are at least three variations of this DIY hack that will keep all of your fingers safe from that solid hammer head when driving a nail through any material.

CLOTHESPEG: Using a clothespeg (or clothespin) to hold the nail in place in lieu of your bare fingers is a favourite for many (we saw it on NZ Ecochick, on YouTube, and other DIY blogs).

COMB: If a comb is handier (maybe it's always in your pocket) then this will do the trick too. Just still be careful as the nail can more easily slide off the comb than with a clothespeg. Check out both tricks on The Owner Builder Network.

CARDBOARD: You can make a hole in a piece of cardboard and you can use this same hole to set any nail in place as you drive the nail in with a hammer. Read about it on Lifehacks.

Of course, you can always wear a pair of work gloves too to keep your hands safe.  And if you got any DIY tips to share with us, just send it in via Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, or email to service@renovatorstore.com.au with the subject “DIY Blog” and we’ll feature it on our blog or social media. It’s more fun with photos, of course!
