7 Tricks to Make Your Home Look Expensive

Posted by Renovator Mate on 05 Jan 2021

A home that looks like an interior design magazine cover is a dream for many of us, but not everyone has the budget for it. Fortunately, there are many tricks to elevate the look of your home and make it look much more expensive and luxurious than it is. Even if you are renting and can’t make any significant changes, there are small things you can do to achieve an expensive look. Read on to see our seven tricks to make your home look expensive.

Add Colour

One of the easiest and least expensive ways to elevate the look of your house is to add pops of colour. This can be an accent wall, coloured cabinet or piece of furniture. Different colours give different vibes, so if you know how to combine them, you can create a luxurious look. The blue colour is very easy on the eye and creates a sense of ease and relaxation, but it can also look very expensive and luxurious, depending on the shade. Dark navy or royal blue is perfect if you want to add luxury to your bedroom. Remember, if you have a lot of one colour in a room, you will create a reverse effect. Less is more. If you are unsure how to combine colours, stick to smaller details and decor pieces.

Moulding

Another easy way to make your house look very expensive is to add moulding.  It doesn't have to be too complicated or a Victorian style. Even simple shapes will do the trick. The same goes for the depth of the moulding, single-depth piece is more than enough. If your house already has moulding on the walls or ceiling, repaint it to give it a little refresh, and don't cover it with furniture. Make it stand out as much as possible. Include some artwork in frames that have similar shapes to the moulding to accentuate it.

Add Art

Adding art pieces to your walls is an easy way to showcase your style while elevating the look of your home. There are many unique pieces that you can place in your living room, bedroom or even hallway. This can range from family photos, your art, to interesting and unique framed prints. Before hanging the pieces, you should make a plan on where each piece should go. That way you can create a perfect balance within the art and the rest of decor and furniture. You can also display smaller statues and pieces of art on side tables and shelves.

Built-in Structures

Built-in furniture and structures add a luxurious look to your home. If a structure or appliances is specially fit for your home, it will always look expensive. An easy way to incorporate built-in features is to have furniture or structures span from top to bottom of a wall, or from one side to the other side. This can be a bookshelf for example. If it’s covering the whole wall or the whole height, it will look very luxurious and expensive. Fill in the bookcase with many books and some decor pieces. A large bookshelf can also be a great spot to showcase your smaller travel souvenirs.

Install Backsplashes

A very easy DIY for your home is to install a backsplash. It’s an affordable way to jazz up the walls and make them look more expensive. Backsplashes look great in kitchens and bathrooms. You can create a more industrial look with a brick backsplash, luxurious one with a marble backsplash, or nature-like and simplistic with a wooden backsplash. Take the surrounding furniture and appliances into consideration when choosing the right backsplash, so to not clash the styles. Besides a backsplash, you can also paint an accent wall or a part of a wall in a bright colour.

Pillows and Throws

Pillows and throws are an easy and affordable way to instantly make your home look more expensive. If you want to add a dash of luxury and comfort into your living room, add some faux fur throws. You can easily accessorize and add interest to your room and couch. Choose pillowcases that have interesting shapes, patterns and bright colours. As for the bedroom, adding some quality pillows and bedding will instantly make it look more expensive, without much effort.  If your furniture is in neutral colours, you can add accents with pillows in fun colours, which you can switch up every season for a different look if you replace the covers.

Add a Rug

Rugs are perfect for creating a more expensive look to your house. Opt for large area rugs, as they will always look more expensive than the small ones. They visually enlarge the room and make it look luxurious. The rug doesn’t have to be expensive, and it’s better to be made from durable materials.

These are just some of the tricks to make your home look more expensive. It’s very easy to make your house look like a magazine cover. If you are unsure, stick with simple colours, shapes and accessories. This will effortlessly create an expensive look.
